"At the core, a tartan is about identity. When I think about the historic and modern connections between Scotland and North America, I stand with pride for the past, present, and future.
I am passionate about deepening links and raising the rich tartan that exemplifies the Scottish American identity.”
Ian Houston, President, SBN in North America

Tartan Day was first suggested in 1986 to promote Scottish Heritage in Canada and in the US and came into existence on the floor of the US Senate in 1998 when it was agreed that the date should be chosen to celebrate the great contribution made by Scots to the world’s premier economy. The date of April 6th was chosen as it marks the date of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320.
